Like everything in your home, your window blinds will accumulate dirt and dust over time. Thankfully, blinds can be remarkably easy to clean. In fact, you can often clean them in an hour or two, so if you're looking to brighten up the look of your blinds, here are a few easy and effective tips and tricks that will almost instantly make any room sparkle.

The Golden Rule: Know Your Material

The best quality blinds are built to last, which means they're meant to be cleaned - repeatedly. Before you start, you're going to want to determine the material of your blinds, since this will dictate how you'll clean them.

Are they wood?

The use a lamb's wool duster or dust them gently with your vacuum's brush attachment. Once or twice a year, you can give them a deep clean with a wood cleaner. Stay clear of soap and water!

Are they metal or vinyl?

For a super fast clean, put on a pair of rubber gloves, and then a pair of cotton gloves over top. Mix a warm solution of soapy water using all-purpose soap. Next, dip your hand in the water and then run your index finger over and thumb under each blind slat. Alternatively, you can take the whole attachment down and place it in a soapy water solution in the tub. Clean each slat with a sponge and rinse with clean water. Hang on the shower curtain to dry.

Are they bamboo?

Whatever you do, don't use water! Instead, use the soft brush attachment of your vacuum and gently run it over each slat. You can also use a feather duster or a soft cloth.

Are they fabric?

These can be the most time consuming to clean. First, use your soft brush vacuum head to remove loose dust and dirt. You can also use a soft cloth to dust. Next, mix a solution using a little all-purpose soap and water. About 1 teaspoon of soap for a 2 litres of water will do. Make sure the soap is mixed well into your container of water.

Before you start washing them down, be sure to pick an inconspicuous area of the blind to test the color. This will ensure the blinds won't fade or bleed. To do this, squeeze the sponge so it is damp, but not soaking wet, and then dab it on that test area. If it's all good to proceed, then re-soak the sponge, squeeze out the extra moisture and wipe down the blinds. Again, you don't want to be soaking the blinds: the sponge should just be damp.

When you're done, use a clean white towel to absorb extra moisture from the blinds, and then allow them to air dry.

And there you have it! Affordable and easy tips to help you clean your blinds, and reinvigorate your space.
