The area was once named Bloomingview. Its current name came from the Huguenots, the French Protestants who settled in the area during the latter part of the 17th  and early 18th centuries to escape religious persecution.

Most of the residences in the Huguenot neighborhood are established. They are  not old but have been developed within the past 30 years. The neighborhood includes a mixture of townhomes, single family homes, and upscale housing communities. To top it all off, the homes here are very well maintained.

Huguenot business district is located around the train station in Huguenot Avenue, while the north and the south are mostly residential areas.

Just north of the neighborhood in Rossville you will find the South Shore Golf Course. It is a premier country club  that has become a favorite destination of golfers of all levels. There is also the Grand Oaks Country Club which offers a unique and memorable golf experience. It features century-old oak trees, abundant wildlife, and two meandering waterways.

If you head south along Huguenot Avenue, you will find Wolfes Pond Park, one of Staten Island’s largest parks. The park offers hiking trails, open fields, play grounds, tennis courts, and a small beach on Raritan Bay.

There are many public and private schools nearby for K-12 students, as well as institutes of higher learning. It includes Wagner College, St. John's University, and the College of Staten Island.

Huguenot is also home to a branch of the New York Public Library.

The easiest way to travel either on or off the Island is by using the train, which stops at the Huguenot station on Huguenot Avenue just south of the Veterans Memorial Parkway. Local buses stop on Luten Avenue and Amboy Road. Residents can also use the West Shore Expressway to access the Staten Island Expressway and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

The real estate in Huguenot is primarily made up of medium sized (three or four bedroom) to large (five or more bedroom) single-family homes and small apartment buildings. There are upscale homes and more economical single-family homes and townhouses.
