Synthetic Motor Oil – Better than Conventional Oil?

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 18 July 2017 02:58

Synthetic Motor oils as the name suggests are manmade, and can consist of an organic compound such as soya bean, canola or plastic resin based. The older, so called conventional or regular oil is petroleum based.

Synthetic motor oils are more expensive than the petroleum based alternative, however because it does not ‘gum up’ or leave unwanted deposits in the engine, it does not need to be changed as often.

Should you switch to synthetic motor oil on an older engine?

That’s the question often asked and debated, and the answer really depends on the age in terms of mileage and condition of the engine. Some oil manufacturers suggest that switching to and from conventional to synthetic motor oils will not be a problem, while others are a little more cautious. It has been suggested that car engines that have over 100,000 miles on the clock and have always run on conventional oil should remain on it otherwise oil seals might start to leak if you switch over to synthetic oil. It really depends on the brand of oil, and in particular what additives have been included.

synthetic motor oils

As an example Mobile 1 is supposed to have additives that protect oil seals and therefore will provide all the benefits that synthetic motor oil has to offer without the disadvantages.

Synthetic motor oil manufacturers include anti-wear additives which help protect critical moving parts prone to excessive wear and synthetic oil reduces the amount of sludge deposit left by conventional motor oil. The higher viscosity formulation helps get rid of unwanted carbon deposits often referred to as ‘burn off’, as well as reduce oil leakage. Synthetic motor oils are constantly tested against numerous industry specifications, as new formulations are developed to ensure that oil seals do not suffer any damage. In fact some synthetic oil manufacturers go so far as to suggest that you can use it in any engine. As usual it is best to check with the vehicle manufacturer as to their recommendation to switch or not.

Synthetic motor oils are supposed to be fully compatible with conventional oils so you are able to switch between them anytime you wish. However once you have experienced the performance improvement as well as better economy it is unlikely that you would want to go back to conventional motor oil, and if your engine is behaving well with no oil leaks plus the improved performance, there is no reason why you should.
