Lost Cause? 3 Major House Flaws That Aren't Unfixable

You've fallen in love with a home that is definitely a fixer-upper. But then the inspection report comes in and your heart sinks. The house has one or more major flaws that might make it a lost cause. While there are some flaws that are unfixable, other major flaws, like the ones mentioned below, are quite rectifiable.

Foundation Issues

Many types of foundation issues are quite repairable and they do not necessarily mean a home should be demolished for a new build. Underpinning done by a company like Techniblock Pty Ltd can be a viable solution. It can drastically help realign a home that's beginning to tilt because of a foundation that's breaking down. Signs of this can include crooked windows or doors that won't close, cracks in the walls, slanted floors and strange gaps. Cracks in the foundation can be repaired by skilled contractors. Get a professional opinion on repair before you determine any foundation problem is too much to handle - it might not be.

Lead Paint

Lead paint or pipes can be a significant issue in a home, especially if you have children or pets and plan to do renovations. Getting rid of lead paint or pipes on your own and in their entirety can be a chore. However, various governmental bodies actually give out grants to fix lead issues in older homes. So if you apply for government grants and receive them, they can cover the cost of repairs. You could also demand the paint be fixed contingent on your offer to buy the home. A more quick fix solution is to seal the paint on the walls, because lead paint isn't a problem if it's not chipping.

Mold

Mold should be treated as the serious problem that it is. Besides being a potentially serious health risk, it is usually an indicator of water issues such as leaky roofs, foundations, or pipe or landscaping problems. Besides cleaning up the mold, you must also find and fix the water problem, which can be no easy task. Still, it is quite doable if you have the time and the money to put into it.

Major flaws in a house you fall in love with do not necessarily make it a lost cause. Pretty much anything besides serious structural integrity problems is repairable if you're willing and able to put in the time and money to fix it. If you're willing and able to deal with problems yourself, or pay to fix them, there aren't too many major house flaws you can't fix.
