How to Survive Kitchen Renovations

A home purchase is a major investment into your future. Just like any other investment, it's important to make sure it appreciates in value over a long period of time. One of the best ways to do this involves completing major renovation projects that'll upgrade the home over the long haul. Sure, there are smaller projects like changing the front door and adding floor tiles that can make a difference. However, one of the main rooms to make a big impact is the kitchen. After all, to most people, the kitchen is the heart of the home. In order to make major changes in the kitchen, you'll probably need to gut everything and start from scratch. There are a few ways to survive the process of a kitchen renovation while still leaving your sanity intact. Consider the tips.

1. Hire a professional.

If you know what you're doing, you may want to do some of the labor yourself and put in some sweat equity. However, if you're like most homeowners, you don't know what you're doing and don't understand a thing about drywall or plumbing. In this case, it's best to hire the professionals. Ask around and find a company with really good reviews. You want a team that's going to do an honest job and avoids shortcuts.

2. Develop a wise and realistic budget.

Sit down and be intentional about researching the costs involved in kitchen renovations. Sit down with your contractor and find out what they expect to spend. In most cases, you'll want to budget a few thousand more than what's expected. You never know if there's mold or something other malfunction down the pike. Because of this, you'll want to be prepared for any financial surprise and stay on top of your wallet.

3. Create a faux kitchen elsewhere.

Whether it's in the spare bedroom or the dining room, choose a workstation where you'll cook and create meals. Set up a sturdy table and purchase a few hot plates and a toaster oven. Crockpots, blenders and a mini-refrigerator will be helpful tools during this transition. You can still have delicious meals even though your kitchen is temporarily out of commission. Always plan the meals ahead of time and meal prep to avoid any issues with food. It's also wise to have a few snacks on hand while waiting for food to cook. Things may take a little longer when you're out of your element in a different space, but where there's a will, there's a way.

4. Do some dining out.

When it's time to create the kitchen renovation budget, remember to budget for dining out. There may be some nights when you'll get frustrated or tired of cooking in another room. Collect a few pizza coupons and take advantage of hot pizza on the weekends. It'll give you a break and a chance to still enjoy a hot meal. Sundays are when most people prepare their meals for the week. If you're not careful, it can be easy to spend all day in the kitchen. Take the family out for Sunday morning brunch, relax and then get back to work in the afternoon. While there may be some temporary discomfort involved in dealing with a major home renovation, understand that the discomfort is worth it in the long run. Your home deserves the upgrade and when it's time to sell or rent out the home, you'll be able to get a lot more money because it's worth more!
