The topic of lawn aeration continually derives at this time of year, and it is surprising to see how often the question "How do I freshen my lawn?" Ventilating the lawn is a must for anyone who wants beautiful deep green grass, so here are some tips on how to aerate like a pro. The biggest key to a lawn aerator is that it has to be heavy. Your lawn has been baking in the sun for years, the dirt it has settled on, any loose soil on top has been washed away, leaving a hard mass of dirt behind. In order to break this hardened dirt, you need a lot of weight placed on a small surface like an aerator tooth. Many needles are quite heavy once built, others are built with a shelf to place concrete blocks on top of or are filled with water. Everything Attachments Lawn Aerators are built with solid cast iron wheels in our stand alone wheel model, or are filled with heavy play sand on our drum style lawn aerator. Either of these will be heavy enough without adding extra weight.

Many older models were known as "spikes" that included many steel  nails welded on a steel roller that would press into the dirt creating a hole. These spikes are inefficient in lawn aeration as they compact the dirt even more than it already is. When you remove a plug from your lawn, the surrounding soil can decompress to fill the open hole along with the rain by dissolving the plug to help fill the holes during the next rainstorm.

It is important that you leave 6 inches of space between rows when plugging the lawn, the purpose of aeration is to allow oxygen to reach the roots of your lawn, not tear the entire yard. You want to leave most of the yard intact, a little goes a long way when it comes to aeration.

Aeration should be done twice a year to get maximum benefit. Connect your garden once in the spring and once in the fall keeps the soil compacting down, helps to keep the straw layer under control and ensures that water can penetrate deeply into the root system of your lawn.

Sow your lawn while the holes are cool, before they begin to fill in. The new lawn will rise and help keep your yard a beautiful shade of green. You must also inseminate your lawn once the compost can enter the root system, a tractor can be used for these two tasks with a PTO fertilizer distributor. Your grass will be healthy and green and will be the envy of the neighborhood.
