All at Once: 5 Big Reasons to Make Your Large Renovation in One Push

Remodeling takes more time and effort than most think. As such, many people advocate splitting a large remodeling project into a series of smaller projects. It is, however, often a better idea to do the opposite. Below are 5 big reasons that you should make one push to get all of your large remodeling projects finished.

Sale

Most people don’t plan their renovations right before they sell the home, but sometimes it’s necessary. For the good of the sale, and other reasons we’ll cover, these kinds of renovations need to be done ASAP. A half-done renovation is an eyesore to potential buyers and may not add much, if any, value to the home. Most buyers would prefer to make their own renovations start to finish instead of trying to piece together the previous owners’ plan. Even if you intend to have the project finished by the time the home can be sold, buyers may think it’s too risky to assume you’ll follow through. For this reason, it’s a good idea to push through the renovation in one go so you can sell a completed home at the value it deserves.

Budget

A particularly good reason to keep pushing through all of your renovations at once is your budget. When you go into a major renovation process, you probably have a strict budget in mind. If you’re experienced, you probably know that the budget is going to grow. If you really want to waste money, though, the best way will be to divide everything into small pieces. If you do your whole renovation in one push, you’ll be able to work with some of the same contractors and likely be able to save a bit of money at the same time. Renovating all at once won’t necessarily guarantee that your budget stays in one piece, but it often helps to quash some of the more common building excesses.

Focus

Another good reason to push forward with all of your resources at once is the ability to keep your focus. If you build over time, there’s a good chance that things will change as you go. You might run out of a certain type of flooring, for example, or you might not be able to get the contractors you want. If you build all at once, you will be able to tighten your focus.

Let’s say you’re renovating the garage. You may be able to get matching cabinetry and other fixtures like red carbon products when you do everything at once, something that wouldn’t be guaranteed to be the case if you did all of your work over time. Your home is much more attractive and valuable when large fixtures are uniform. Try to consider the benefits of keeping things going all at once.

Avoiding Feature Creep

If you’ve had any experience with home remodeling, you’ll notice that feature creep is a very real thing. Feature creep is that terrible problem that happens when you find more and more things to do with your money. If you do everything at once, you have less time to think about what could be done and, generally, less money to play with. This allows you to get everything done without risking your budget on a passing fancy. While it’d be great to get everything you want all at once, the truth is that most homeowners need boundaries. If you can keep yourself going on a major remodeling push, you should have all of the boundaries that you need.

Getting It Done

Finally, pushing to get everything done at once gives you fewer excuses. There’s a common stereotype that surrounds project houses, and it usually involved unfinished rooms. There’s a good reason for this, of course—remodeling is tough work! If you give yourself a chance to take a break, there’s a very good chance that you’ll never start working again. If you can keep going until everything is done at once, though, you’ll never get that chance to rest. You’ll come out of the process far more exhausted than you would if you broke things up, but you stand a much better chance of finishing things off with a completely finished project.

Don’t give yourself the chance to sabotage your own remodeling project. Do things at once to keep your budget in line, to avoid adding too much to your home, and to force yourself to get finished. Don’t let yourself take the easy way out and miss out on the renovation of which you have always dreamed. Do it all at once to see the real rewards of finishing a remodeling project.
