Known Causes Why Your Garage Door Opens and Closes With a Thud

Your garage door will work exactly how it’s supposed to be most of the time but if you happen to find it opening or closing with a thud, there are a couple of possible causes that can be identified easily. If you have a 9 x 7-foot garage door, check the torsion spring located above it. This spring serves as a counterweight and can be broken over time.
A 16-ft x 7-ft garage door uses a torsion spring system. One of its two springs is probably damaged reason why it opens or closes with a loud bang. Another reason could be a defective lifting cable.
The solution is to perform a visual check to determine if the springs are actually broken. It is not recommended to open the door and replace the springs by yourself because this is an extremely dangerous task. Call in a garage door repair technician immediately for the job.
