If you have a basement that has just been collecting dust and old cardboard boxes, it’s time to make a change. Utilize the space and turn it into something that you and your family can enjoy. Like turning it into a game room and realizing your dreams.

Having a game room in your own house has many advantages that eventually outweigh the cost of installing one. Your weekends, holidays or even birthday’s become fun because you don’t have to go out for fun and can have an enjoyable time at your own house with your family and friends.

You can get furniture like a foosball coffee table or an air hockey table and by integrating technology and comfort in the perfect way you will want you to stay indoors and appreciate the space you have created.

A game room is a great idea to have your kids under supervision and in a safe space. At the same time, if you are a guy you can use it as your man’s cave and invite your friends over for game nights.

It can be used by every member of the family and can be used for a bonding space for the whole family as well. I bet your friends will want to come over more because who does not want to hang out at such a cool place?

Here are 5 tips for turning your basement into a Game Room.

  1. Get Insulation

Basements are cool during summers but very cold in winters and if you want to spend time in your basement without freezing in the cold, get insulation. You can do it by yourself or hire an expert.

One thing to keep in mind is that the basements are damp and need to be handled. If you add a window air conditioner along with the insulation in the basement, it will have a great cooling effect for the electronics and will become the favorite room to hang out in the summers.

  1. Have it Soundproofed

Soundproofing is very handy because you don’t want to contain your party and excitement but don’t want to upset the neighbors or disrupt the rest of the house with the noise either. Soundproofing also helps with the quality of the audio in the game room itself.

You can do some basic soundproofing yourself by adding thick curtains, heavy carpets, standing or wall mounted acoustic panels that can absorb the noise. But if you are looking for something full-fledged, hire some professional help to get it done.

  1. Get the Wiring Sorted

If you are only going for entertainment pieces like a foosball coffee table, an air hockey table or a pool table, you may not need to worry about wiring much except for the lighting.

But if you are going to add an entertainment system, music system, video game consoles and an LED, you should get your wiring sorted.

Wires just jumbled up or passing in between the space are not nice. Have the wires mounted with pins on the walls or hidden under the carpet so that they don’t ruin the look of the room.

  1. Have Proper Lighting

Your game room should be well-lit to have a cozy sort of feel but not too lit that it feels like one is being blasted with brightness. Notice how coffee shops are not overly lit and give a very cozy vibe? That’s what you want to achieve.

And if you have a projector installed or an LED TV, your lighting system should have multiple options to have the room completely dark, well-lit or to have a few lights on only.

  1. Pick the Right Furniture

You have to keep comfort and the space available in mind when choosing the right furniture for your game room. Don’t stuff the game room with fancy looking pieces but rather go for furniture that is functional and comfortable.

For example get those ergonomically designed chairs if your family is into gaming, get some bean bags as they are easy to move around and look cool at the same time or get ottoman stools that can be moved around to where ever the action is.
