Tips for Creating a Fabulous and Functional Home Office

Working from home can be amazing. You get t go to work in your PJs. You get to enjoy more flexible hours. You get to avoid sitting in your car for 2 hours a day listening to the same Taylor Swift song play over and over again on 50 different radio channels. No doubt: it's pretty sweet.

It can also be a little chaotic at times. When you don't have to keep up appearances at the office, it's easy to let things slide. Forget about your own appearance, your workspace can also slide into disaster. A disorganized space is usually an unproductive space. It may sound like your mother talking here, but let's face it: she was right. Studies confirm that living or working in a messy environment can have negative effects on your focus and concentration. If you can't hone in on the task at hand, you won't be able to complete it. And if you can't do your job? Well, you know what happens then...

So, if you're looking to tidy up your home office and make it more fabulous and functional, read on. This article is going to show you have to infuse your space with style and functional organization that will make getting down to business a breeze.

1. Use Vertical Real Estate

Homes are getting smaller, so chances are your home office is not going to be sprawling. This means floor space is at a premium, and this is space you’re likely going to have to use for your chair  — and don’t skimp on your office chair! Your butt is going to spend a lot of time in this seat, so invest in one that’s comfortable and features a design you love.

Once you’ve got your all-important chair sorted, free up the rest of the room by using mounted shelving and storage solutions. You can even use a wall-mounted desk that can fold up when it’s not in use.

2. Use Mirrors

Mirrors aren’t just for checking yourself out. You can also use them to brighten up a space. Since they reflect light, your home office will appear more vibrant and even bigger. Use one larger mirror on a wall as opposed to many smaller mirrors.

3. Add Green Power

Plants work wonders to infuse your space with a sense of life. Their verdant presence has been shown to increase mood, focus and as a result, productivity. Plants like aloe vera, English ivy and snake plant will also purify your air, so you can breathe easier during those stressful conference calls.

4. Add Colour!

No one is saying you have to paint your office bright yellow (though yellow is the colour that’s associated with creativity) but adding a pop of colour to your room can help increase feelings of goodness and positivity, which will never go amiss on those dreary Monday mornings.

Which colour you choose will depend on your personal sense of style, but try to incorporate some vibrant hues. You don’t have to paint, either. Maybe you buy a stunning pink vase, or a sky blue picture frame. Maybe your pencil holder or shelving is violet. Choose a colour that inspires you with positive vibes, and working those late nights won't be as much of a drag.

5. Showcase Your Accomplishments

Whether it's an award, a degree or diploma, showcasing your accomplishments proudly in your home office is a good way to remind yourself of your successes. Who cares if no one else sees it! We all have bad days at work, and we all make mistakes. Reminding yourself that you are a champ is a great way to keep a bad day from turning into a bad week.

Simple, right? Making your home office look and feel stylish and functional doesn't have to be difficult -- and it doesn't have to be expensive. Just invest in a few key pieces that truly inspire a sense of joy within you, make space for structure and order, and your office will be a bastion of workplace productivity.
