Common Roofing Mistakes

Are you aware of the common roofing mistakes to avoid? Roofing includes a huge range of tasks which needs some tricks and experience. That’s why it’s important to do your due diligence before repairing or installing a roof yourself in order to avoid mistakes. This article will go over some of the most common roofing mistakes that people often encounter, and what to do to prevent them from happening to your roof.

Most Common Roofing Mistakes - 5 Things That'll Cost You

1. Loading Truss Packages Incorrectly

The most common mistake that even experienced builders often make from time to time, is loading truss packages incorrectly on top of a framed building. It's just all too easy to drop a package at the wrong area of a home, and even easier to spin them around backwards. You must pay close attention, and have your loading plan ready when they arrive on site.

2. Wrong Application Methods

Not putting up enough paint and then applying it incorrectly is another mistake many people make.

3. Not Paying Close Enough Attention

Home builders tend to not pay close enough attention when their foundation is being set up to be poured. Their roof system is designed exactly to the plans, and any deviations in the foundation will lead to problems with fitting all elements of the roof properly.

After the painting of the house is done, it is important to have a clean-up routine for the roof every six months. A mixture of bleach, liquid detergents and water will be required to have the cleanup done.

Debris will then have to be cleared every once in a while to ensure that pests do not make homes within the fallen leaves, dead branches, among many other things that can build up on your roof. Bald spots or rough patches in the paint needs to be found and repaired as soon as possible as well.

4. Painting Your Roof with Leftover Paint

Your roof requires a different kind of paint. The paint that is used in the rest of the homes does not work with the roof. The basic reason behind this is that the material to the roof is quite different as compared to the rest of the house. Paint used on wood will not work for roofing solutions.

For some unknown reason, some people believe that an engineered roofing system that is built with roof trusses is foolproof. The real truth is that an engineered roofing system can be a lot less labor intensive and cheaper to build than a conventional roof stack, just as long as mistakes are kept to a minimum. You see, these types of roof systems are designed in such a way that each piece has its own place. There is very little room for error.

5. Sloppy Plumbing & Line Job

Another common mistake is having a poorly braced off, and or sloppy plumbing and line job -- or even worse, a scam. The outside walls in particular are critical, so they must be lined and braced off well. Make sure to add some extra braces outside, specifically for loading your roof trusses because they will be getting bumped when the crane drops the loads in. Remember that once your trusses are loaded, moving walls is very difficult.

Bottom Line

There are many tasks to accomplish and master when installing or repairing your own roof. That’s why it’s important to know how to do so adequately to reduce any chances of making a mistake. Although everyone tries to not make mistakes, they can still ultimately happen. This article went over some of the most common roofing mistakes to avoid to make sure that you’re not left with costly repair bills for your roof.
