Building or remodeling your pool can be both exciting and overwhelming. The initial cost can be intimidating, but you also stand to enjoy the benefits of a new pool. Understanding the construction process is one of the best ways to know more about your pool and enjoy the process. Here are some of the main stages of pool construction.

States of Pool Construction - Increasing Your Home’s Value

Before construction kicks off, a pre-construction site meeting will take place. You, your site supervisor and design consultant will review the plans and inspect the site to ensure no modifications are required.

Digging the Pool

This is the first step of the construction process. Initially, the hole will be slightly deeper and larger than the finished pool.

Form and Steel

Once the digging is complete, the hole is lined with steel rebar

City Inspections

After installation of the rebar, an inspector will check that everything is up to code by reviewing your pool plans and job site. At this point, the pool builder will schedule the gunite phase. It helps to bear in mind that there are about 25 days worth of inspection during the entire pool construction process.

Shell Installation/Gunite

At this point, the concrete that constitutes your pool’s shell and steps are applied pneumatically. This phase also includes working on the pool design elements to include fountains, swim-outs or a gunite spa, for example.

Strip and Backfill

Once gunite has dried, backfilling around walls and braces begins. Depending on where you live you may need to have a survey performed at this stage.

Plumbing Installation and Inspection

Plumbing crews begin installation and dig trenches for pipes that will run from your pool to the pool equipment.

Tile and Coping Installation

At this stage, the construction crew will install the pool’s coping and waterline tile.

Homeowner Responsibilities

As the homeowner, you’re responsible for sod, fencing, landscape, alarms and sprinkler systems, unless it’s otherwise specified in the contract. Bear in mind that these items must be installed before the final inspection.

Electrical Equipment Hook Up and Inspection

At this stage, the electrical crew will install your filter, pool pump and gas heater (where applicable). They will also run the conduit for the main electric supply used by your pool equipment and install any wiring and lighting necessary for your pool.

Pool Plaster and Filling

This stage involves the careful preparation of the concrete surface, then applying your pool’s finish before filling the pool with water.

Clean Up and Final Inspection

This phase involves the removal of any trash that was created during the construction phase and also the final grading of your yard.

Bottom Line

Above are the stages of pool construction you can expect with your upcoming pool installation. Remember that the timeline can vary based on the type of pool you’re installing in your backyard. Overall, the process is fairly straightforward if done properly.
