Essential Tools for Homeowners

Got a house? Then you need tools to save money on projects that could rack up thousands in charges from contractors and handymen. In this article, we’ll cover the most essential tools that you need to complete any project around your home.

Screwdriver Set

Screwdrivers are used in almost every application around the house. From tightening door handles, providing leverage to open old paint cans, installing light switches--there are endless uses for screwdrivers. Of course, you’ll want to have a variety of heads to fit old and modern screw types, including slotted, Phillips, Torx, Posidriv, and hex.

Tape Measure

Sooner or later, you’ll need to measure something. Therefore, a tape measure of at least 12 feet is the answer for measuring the thickness of lumber, heights of door frames, and the square footage of your home. There are a variety of measuring tapes out there, from pocket rods, wide blade tape measurers, to diameter tapes, so it’s important to consider your options.

Hammer

A claw hammer goes a long way in your home. From hanging pictures, assembling furniture, removing rusty nails, and more, a hammer is an indispensable tool that you’ll find yourself using daily.

Duct Tape

Duct tape is useful for quick semi-permanent fixes around the house. Thanks to its ability to adhere to nearly any surface and its incredible durability, duct tape should always be laying around your home.

Flashlight

Let there be light with a flashlight. Chances are that you’ll need one for when a breaker is tripped or you’re adjusting something in the crawlspace.

Pliers

Pliers act as a way to increase the grip strength and leverage of your hand. Pliers can be used for nearly any application, whether you need to tighten a loosened shower head, trim wiring, pull out staples, and more.

Level

Whether you’re hanging pictures or creating a piece of furniture, a level is always handy. Similar to tape measures, there are plenty of options to choose from. For masonry specific projects, choose the best level for masons. However, for your everyday needs, a simple level will do.
