Hurricane Mathew Damage
When you live in a region that has hurricane activity, you must perform a home checkup to protect your property and your finances. Here are four home wellness reminders to help you prepare for the next hurricane season.

Upgrade Your Home’s Windows

If your home has old-fashioned glass windows, then it isn’t protected during a hurricane. When you live in a hurricane-prone area, you must have special windows and window frames installed. These types of windows have thicker glass and sturdier frames, but you should also have devices installed to cover the windows before the hurricane reaches your region. You can select automated window shutters that will cover the windows completely so that the glass won’t break and water will not enter your home.

The Removal of Decaying Trees

A falling tree is a huge danger for a home during a hurricane, so you should have the trees on your property checked for any problems. A professional tree surgeon can remove the dangling branches or have a damaged tree cut down. By performing these tasks, you can avoid having a huge tree falling against your home from the high winds of a hurricane. A large tree can fall through the sides or the top of a home, causing extensive damage that can take several months to fix.

Secure the Roof

Contact a roofing company to have your home’s rooftop, chimney and gutters inspected. The roof may require only minor repairs that include replacing some shingles or nailing down some loose shingles, but a technician may find major issues. Fixing a degraded roof can prevent major problems from moisture leaks during the torrential rains from a hurricane. There are also ways for roofing technicians to stabilize the shingles, gutters and other materials to prevent damage from high winds.

Check Your Home Insurance Policy

While it may seem boring and time-consuming to read your home insurance policy, you should verify that it covers the cost of repairs after a hurricane, including roofing repairs. If you don’t understand the policy, or if you notice any written exclusions for certain types of damage, then you should contact your insurance agent for clarification or to upgrade the policy.

Preparing for a Hurricane

The local authorities may tell you to leave the area when a hurricane is approaching, but if you must remain at home, then you should prepare in advance by having bottled water and nonperishable food. The power in a home will likely not work, so you will need candles and flashlights to see. Stay inside your home unless there is flooding in your area, and also, remain alert for any dangers that can include leaking gas lines.
