How to Measure for Garage Doors

In this article, you will get a step-by-step guide on how to measure your garage door for when you have to figure out how much paint to buy when you plan on painting it, insulating it or for any other reason. The given instruction is easy to understand and implement. You just need to follow it right to get the best outcome. In the case of any confusion, it is better to take the help of an expert

Step One

Start by measuring the width of your garage door opening. Measure it at the widest point that is the distance between the left and ride sides of the finished opening. You can get more accurate results by framing the inside of the door opening with a 2" x 6" wood. Also, make sure that some general irregularities such as jambs are not square.

Step Two

Now start measuring the opening height of the door at the highest point. The highest point means the distance between the top and the floor of the finished opening. Here also, look at the irregularities such un-level floor.

Step 3

In this, you need to measure the size of the area near the opening. You will need up to 5” on each side to get a proper installation of the vertical track. When it is a two doors installation, the center needs to be 10” wide minimum. You can decide depending on the result of the measurement.

Step 4

After measuring the width and height, next, you need to measure between the ceiling and the top of the door opening area. You can also measure the lowest obstruction at the ceiling. Both will work.

Step Five

Measure the distance between the opening and rear of your garage or the nearest obstruction. Measure the one that you find more appropriate. If you are planning to install sectional type doors, then calculate the door height and additional 18” for a manual lift door. When you want to install an electric opener, the bookroom requirement of the door will be door height and an extra 4'2”.

Things to Consider

While measuring, you will have to consider a few other things:

  • Notice any stairs or light that comes in the way
  • A vertical electrical outlet that you need for a door opener
  • Make sure that all the wood jambs and are in good condition
  • Observe the floor level and know the previous door fitting
  • Check any ductwork or pipes above or near the door
  • Follow proper garage door safety tips to ensure that you and the people around you are safe
Conclusion

Now you know how to measure for garage doors. You will find it easy if you understand the process completely and then you will start measuring. Measure it right so that you can decide the best fit for your garage door. You can also check the installation requirements of your previous garage door to have an idea.
