Tips to Leave the Stress behind after Moving House

Written by Posted On Friday, 08 January 2016 00:30

Moving house is stressful, really stressful, it's a series of highs and lows but eventually it becomes worth it.  You have spent hours upon hours obsessively checking property websites for new additions, you have searched and viewed a ton of houses, fallen in love with a few, played phone tennis with agents, solicitors and the bank.  Stakes were high and emotions higher in what is basically a full time job.  And when that's over there's the move, the dreaded move. All of this would bring a sweat to the coolest of characters.  But now the sale is completed, the last box is on the van, what next?  More work?  No thank you!  Here are some top tips to leave the stress behind after moving into your new place.

Moving in Party

What better way to finish the move and relax than opening a bottle of red with friends, even better a few bottles. Even better still, a full party before the house is fully furnished and looking good.  If you want to really let loose and then plan the party to be in a room that is to be decorated first and put all the removal boxes in a room that you want to keep the nicest so that they make it inaccessible.  Or why not plan a fancy dress party with the theme of “tradesmen” not telling people it's actually a decorating party, as they turn up put a paint brush, screwdriver or wallpaper remover in their hand and get everyone on task for a few hours and then party!  Many (deceived) hands make light work.

Minimalism

Being a minimalist doesn't mean having no possessions and living a boring life and is more about having more from less.  With the current state of advertising and consumerism we have created a cycle of behaviour that’s hard to break and leaves us empty with a house full of stuff! We say we will be happy once we buy something, so we work harder, we buy it and then before we appreciate it we are on to the next object to buy what will make us happy. We slowly burn ourselves out and lose the concept of what's really valuable.  I always recommend de-cluttering before a move, but once it's all boxed if you only unbox once you need an item within a few weeks you get a clear indication for what you truly need than what you want.  Getting rid of things that you once sought after so badly can be a tough conversation in your mind but can be very liberating bringing a new type of fulfilment to life. This infographic covers a lot of the issues.

Cardboard Heaven

So you had a belter of a party, you realised you hauled half of your possessions to your new house for no reason and now have a stack of cardboard on your hands.  Now whilst cardboard is recyclable and compostable  here are a few better options for gaining good karma points.  If they are still in good condition I guarantee that within 24 hours a very happy person will collect them after a Facebook, Gumtree or Freecycle post.  Playgroups could use them eternally to make all manner of fun things or you could just keep them and make a giant adult fort in the dining room.

Now while there is still plenty of practical yet boring things to be done i.e. utilities, change of addresses, register with a new doctor, please don't forget to have fun and share some love around whilst leaving those stress demons back at the old house! Get out amongst the new community meet the neighbours, ride your bike, explore the sights, give treats to the local dogs and enjoy this new chapter in your life.
