Moving anywhere can be stressful, but moving in New York can be extremely trying on the nerves.  Stop, take a deep breath and relax!  Here are a few tips to help guide you through your move with ease.  Kick your feet up and read on, you’ll be having dinner in your new place before you know it!

8 Weeks beforethe Move

·         Start researching moving companies

·         Start exploring your new neighborhood, figure out where you will bank, grocery shop, take your dry cleaning etc.

7 Weeks

·         Don’t forget to change your address with the post office, friends and family

·         You will also need to give your new contact information to those who need it.

·         Update your children’s schools with their new information as well

6 Weeks

·         Go through closets and get rid of clothing you no longer wear

·         After closets, go room by room and make a visual inventory of furniture you will keep and what you don’t need.

·         Start a donation box for random items you come across while packing that you don’t need

5 Weeks

·         Obtain moving supplies, boxes, tape, markers, labels etc.

·         Start dwindling down the food you already have in the house, try to shop as little as possible so you don’t have to take food with you

·         Create a room-by-room packing schedule and get started.  Consider a labeling system, perhaps by colored label or room

·         Stop making online purchases until you move to your new address so you don’t have any lagging packages left after you move

4 Weeks

·         Confirm your move with newyorklocalmovers.com

·         Submit official change of address forms at the post office

·         Secure a babysitter if you have children

·         Lure a few friends with pizza and beer to help you move small things and unpack on the big day

3 Weeks

·         Purchase a few clear plastic totes to pack the items you will need immediately like toiletries, underwear and socks, plastic dishes and silverware, paper towels, cleaning spray and other things along that line.  Plan on moving all clear totes personally with you in your vehicle

·         Also, have a separate tote for high value and important items like jewelry, important documents, photographs etc.

·         Cancel newspaper subscriptions and other prepaid home deliveries

·         Do a video walk through of your place.  Recording furniture and its current condition

2 Weeks

·         You should be packing, packing, packing!  In all your spare time.  You want to make sure you have literally everything in boxes before your movers arrive.  Don’t forget those donation boxes!

·         Clean your appliances

·         Make sure you draw out cash and have credit cards for unseen expenses

·         Fill family prescriptions and keep medical supplies in a separate tote

1 Week

·         Cancel old utilities and confirm new ones

·         Take donation boxes to local charity or second hand store

·         Do a computer backup just in case

·         Have each family member pack a suitcase to live out of for a week as you unpack

·         Confirm with moving company

·         If you are a renter, take pictures of your empty place once you have your things moved out to ensure the state in which you left it.  Also take pics of your new rental place before you move in.
