General Moving Tips and Advice on Moving with Pets

When it comes to moving, having a lot of boxes is an absolute must. If you are very busy, you might choose the option to buy or purchase cardboard boxes. However, there is a cheaper way – to search for free boxes! The easiest ways to do so is to ask friends, family members, and colleagues that have moved recently whether they keep the boxes from their last move. You can also check on the web and in the local departments, grocery, supermarket, and discount stores.

If you're planning to use the services of a moving company for your relocation, make sure to get quotes from at least two companies. Preferably, get estimates from three or four professional movers. This way, you will have different price options and can pick the best one. Furthermore, make sure to check the companies online. They might not be insured, which is a bad sign.

When moving out, it is important to check the conditions in your lease contract. In the most common case, you will be obligated to clean the property before the move and repair any damage that was done during the lease period. This is necessary in order to get your deposit back.

Changing you address is a stressful and exhausting process. However, there is one positive thing about it – it is the best time to de-clutter. So, if you have a lot of unneeded clothes or other items, you can use the “four boxes” method. Essentially, you get four big boxes and label them with: “keep and use”, “sell/donate”, “keep for storing” and “throw away”. This way, you will get rid of a lot of things that won't clutter your new place and you can start doing some of the moving-related tasks on your own. Just make sure not to start with the things you should pack last before a move.

Moving with cats is not an easy task. However, if you prepare for it, the process can be significantly easier for you and your beloved furry pet. There is one easy technique to prepare your kitty for the relocation. About a week before the move, choose a quiet room, and place your cat's food, water, bed and litter tray there. This way the cat will get used to this room more, and you will be able to leave it there during the moving day. It's important to leave the room closed during the relocation, because the cat will be very stressed from all the strangers, boxes, and the noise. Make sure to warn the movers not to open this room, because the last thing you need is your cat to run away.

During the move, make sure to place your beloved kitty at a comfortable place in your car, preferably in a reliable carrier. When you do that, you can let the movers handle the last items from the room where your cat was. Keep in mind that it will be stressed during the move, so you might have to pet it while driving. If the journey is long, you will need a big carrier where you can put food, water and your cat's litter tray. What you should remember is that your cat is having a bad time during the move, so make sure not to open the carrier until you arrive.

In order to introduce the cat to the new place, unload the items from it's room first. Then, you can leave your kitty there while the movers unload the rest of the items. In order for your cat to feel a bit more comfortable, you can take a piece of clothing and gently rub it on you cat's neck and face. Then rub the same piece on different places in the house at cat height. This way, its natural smell will be spread faster, and your furry friend will get used to the new place in a couple of weeks.
