Is it really necessary to replace ordinary CCTV cameras with HD ones

Believe it or not, but investigative agencies from around the world often point out that footage and image obtained from most of the CCTV cameras are often pixilated and blurry. This makes it of no use for the police and does not stand in the court of law as evidence. Such footage plays a key role in identifying suspects in terrorism and serious crime cases.  But, more than 50 percent of the footage from private and public cameras in some countries is poor. The reason, people still use poor quality cameras.

Some CCTV systems are equipped with cameras whose footage is not even better than cheap webcams that people around the world used in 1998.

Poor quality footage is of no use

Experts suggest that cameras installed at public places are often installed with an intention to just monitor the crowd and control high-volume, low-level crime. Cameras are often installed at wrong spots by unprofessional technicians.  Identifying suspects in footage obtained from such cameras is extremely difficult. Plus, due to poor systems in place, most of the people store their footage just for 30 days.

The best option is to replace these old cameras that are not capable of offering footage quality required by law and order agencies. Location for these cameras should be selected as per local law enforcement requirements.

Michael Plaxton is one of Canada's popular forensic video analysts. He recently interacted with journalists and shared his opinion on this matter.

"Good quality videos often save court's time as accused do not say anything when they see themselves in the video footage committing the crime,"-says  Michael Plaxton.

Most of the security systems consist of digital video recorder system, four to five cameras and hard drive to store footage. If you opt for cheaper options, the cameras in such systems are of low quality and its hard drive for recording also consists of lesser space. Remember, footage recorded by cheap systems with cheap cameras may prove to be of no use for investigators. Thus, it is advisable to opt for alternatives that offer large recording capacity with high-quality cameras to capture footage.

Upgrade your security systems

Until the end of last decade, high-quality cameras were not everyone's piece of cake, but now everyone can afford one. There are several companies that manufacture and sell IP-based high-definition security cameras that almost every homeowner can afford to purchase or rent.

DVR system is replaced by NVR (network video recorder) which takes care of multiple functions, including data management and storage of footage.

There is no need to worry even if you do not wish to completely get rid of the old system. New systems can integrate with the existing system and help you save several dollars.
