Your standard homeowner insurance policy is designed to cover water damage to your home. This type of water damage could be as a result of a leaking pipe but not natural flooding. To avoid such unwanted water damage, you should check some of these tips.

Turn Off Pipes

This should be like an everyday thing to do but most water damage occurs because of it. A major cause of this is forgetting to turn off washing machine taps. If you have to be away from your home for a day, it is best you turn off all taps in the house.

Clear the Gutters

Gutters are designed to channel excess water away from your house. They tend to work perfectly when obstructed. During fall, these gutters are blocked with dead leaves. You have to actively clear the gutters to clear its drainage channel.

Winter Tips

During winter, everything gets frozen and things are changed at that time. As winter fades away, it tends to leave behind excess unwanted water. You should be proactive about thus to avoid any water damage. It is best to cut water supply to any tap located outside of the house. In full blown winter they basically become useless.
