How to take care of a smelly rug

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 19 October 2016 04:35

Are you a rug aficionado? Do you enjoy having as many rugs as possible? If your home is basically a rug store on its own, then you must be very familiar with the struggles of cleaning a rug or a carpet. If you have taken up your love towards rugs very seriously, you may have equipped yourself with the best tools and products designed for cleaning carpets and rugs, right? But there are some occasions when even your strong store-bought cleaning products will not help you deal with.

For example, bad smells are one of the major problems a rug aficionado can have. Sometimes you do not even realize that a certain unpleasant odor is coming from your rug, but it is. Some smells have a habit of clinging onto carpets for their dear life and are very, very hard to get rid of.

Of course, all carpets get a certain stink after a while, even if you do clean them properly regularly. Because that is just how rugs and carpets work. When they have been used for a long time, they develop a certain wear smell that can usually be dealt with easily with some persistence on your part and proper products and methods.

But what happens when your rugs get stinky because of some outside factor? Then it gets really hard because sometimes you might think you have done a good job but in actuality you have not.

The rest of the story will tell you a few efficient ways to get rid of some smells that are very common for rugs and carpets.

For most light and not so pungent and strong smells, you can just sprinkle a fair amount of baking soda on your rug and let it soak overnight, then simply vacuum the baking soda off. But if that does not help, here are some other ways you can try getting rid of bad smells from your rugs.

Mix equal parts warm water and liquid dish soap and beat with an egg beater until it gets foamy, then scoop some of the foam and use a sponge or a brush to rub your rug with. This will help with a stain and with the smell if it was an accidental spill of some sort.

Carpet steam cleaning acton also uses liquid dish soap and water mixture to clean up after your cat or dog has accidentally urinated on your rug. Use them to wash way as much of it as you can, after you think you have done enough, spray the area with white vinegar. But do not overdo it, do not soak your carpet in vinegar. Use a sponge to rub the vinegar slightly so that it can effectively kill the smell beneath the surface of the rug as well. Wait for a few minutes to dry almost completely and sprinkle baking soda. If you think the smell is too strong and you wish or you just want to be sure that the smell is gone, leave it overnight. The next day vacuum the baking soda, and the smell of vinegar and pet urine should be gone.

If there is some other smell coming from your carpets, you can simply try mixing water and white vinegar in a spray bottle and add 5-10 drops of an essential oil of your choice, plus maybe 5 drops of tea tree oil – it has antibacterial properties and will help kill the smell-causing bacteria. And the other essential oil can be used, to just scent your rug cleaner and therefore your rug as well.

And there you go, I think these two methods should be more than enough to help you in your battle with smelly rugs. Good luck.
