5 Common Plumbing Problems People Face in the Winter Time

As the first sparkling frost quickly approaches, we know winter is on the way. Frozen nose and frozen toes are to be expected. Ponds and lakes iced over provide hours of timeless fun. But not all things are frozen equally. Winter, though thrilling in its own way, can be a nightmare for plumbing issues. No one wants to deal with frozen water pipes. And there are several more issues to be aware of too. Here are some thoughts to consider before the temperatures reach and stay below 32 degrees.

Busted Pipes
Kitchen sinks are most often found along an outer wall in your house, probably near a window. It makes for a brighter setting, but can also cause cold pipes. You may be aware that improperly insulated pipes can freeze, cutting off your water supply. But those frozen pipes can bust too. That makes for an even messier problem. Check your water pipes, especially ones near outer walls before they freeze, preventing a line bust.

Outside Faucets
If you have outside faucets, hoses or spigots, you’ll want to attend to those before temperatures plummet. Hoses should be detached and stored away as water in then will freeze. Valves should be installed to shut off outside faucets or some type of insulation should be put around them. If they freeze and bust you will have a mess in your home.

Other Outside Plumbing
If you have a pool, outside bathroom or shower there are more possibilities for unwanted issues. Have someone from a company like Professional Plumbing Systems, a group of expert
plumbers from Spanish Fork help you make sure everything is properly shut off and lines are blown out. Then, when summer’s warmth returns, all your outside plumbing will be in good working order and ready for your enjoyment.

Septic Tanks
It’s never a good idea to ignore a septic tank if you have one. Risking a backup or sewage leak in or around your house is just not a good gamble. Even more costly is to have it happen in winter. The hard ground will make repairs slower and more expensive.

Hot Water Heater
Hot water is necessary, especially when trying to keep cozy through the long winter months. Sometimes an element in your hot water heater goes bad long before it’s noticed. Generally, we use less hot water, for showering that is, in the summer. Then frigid weather hits and the realization that the water isn’t warm enough for a decent shower hits. Have your hot water heater checked and serviced before the problem leaves you shivering.

Having a warm home and an abundance of hot water throughout winter is necessary for your health as well as your mentality. Ever try to talk yourself up before plunging into a super cold pool? Exhilarating, but it is not likely something you want to do before every shower in the cold weather. Enjoy the beautiful season’s change! But make sure your home is prepared inside and out before there is a problem, saving yourself money, stress, a headache, and major home repairs during the cold winter months.
