Inman Park Atlanta Tour of Homes

One event that is always clearly marked in the calendar of any Atlanta based design firm is the Inman Park Tour of Homes. It's the perfect way to exhibit your work, not to mention quite the honor to be invited. The Tour of Homes is part of a bigger annual Spring festival in the Inman park neighborhood. The festival was started in the seventies to celebrate the area’s beauty, to promote restoration and to showcase its stunning Victorian properties. It has fast become Atlanta’s most-loved street festival.

In addition to the Tour of Homes, the festival includes a street market, fun run, street parade and various other activities for all ages. The Tour of Homes is a chance for the public to view some of the neighborhood’s most attractive residences. Each year a committee selects the homes they would like to include in the tour and approach the homeowners for their consent. One of the homes selected this year was designed by Nandina Home & Design.

This isn't the first time Nandina has won a celebrated spot on the Tour. It's the fourth consecutive year one of their designed homes has been chosen. The interior design firm was established in 2006 in Aiken, South Carolina, where they operate out of a retail location. They also have a sister store in Inman park, Atlanta. The store offers a curated collection of fine home furnishings and accessories as well as full service interior design.

Their entry into this year’s Tour of Homes is a gorgeous 3 bed, 2 bath condo in 'The Natalie' on Waverly Way; a nearly 100 year old converted building in a scenic Inman Park neighborhood.  The condo boasts 10-foot ceilings, dark wood trim, pocket doors, heart-pine floors, and the original glass and molding. These features make the space feel like more like a craftsman bungalow than a condo. The unit is on the second floor, where a child’s bedroom overlooks the pool, and a screened porch provides a skyline view from a hammock. "The energy here is beautiful," says the homeowner.

The design in this home is contemporary with some rustic elements. It was designed by John Ishmael who works out of Nandina’s Inman Park store.  Ishmael was given the request to create an interesting yet livable space; somewhere where the homeowner could entertain but that was also functional. This is what the Nandina team specialize in; ‘Real life, Real style’.

Spectacular Dining Room

Ishmael created a modern, playful, eclectic space that brings together the best of old world charm, contemporary colors, modern comforts and a touch of Hollywood glamour. Most of the furnishings in the Waverly condo were sourced from Nandina's Atlanta store, including the window treatments which were made in their custom workroom. They also stock original artwork, like the horse painting here by the artist Susan Burns.  The painting adds warmth and movement to this room:

The Waverly property will appear in The Tour of Homes along with several other properties and points of interest in the Inman Park neighborhood. These include another craftsman style bungalow on Waverly, new constructions, carefully restored properties from the early 1900s, a barn, and a Methodist church. Nandina's previous entries in the tour have included a modern urban loft and a stylish town home.

If you look through the Nandina portfolio there are many more examples of these creative designs which successfully make homes feel spacious yet cosy, stylish yet comfortable and inviting. The one aspect of this kind of Tour that is so alluring is the real-life aspect. When you glimpse that exquisite room in the pages of House Beautiful it is hard to relate to the feeling, scale, and textures of the room.

The Tour gives people the chance to see beautiful homes that are real. Isn't that what good design should be about? Creating beautiful backdrops for people's lives. The Tour is an excellent opportunity to wander round beautifully designed homes and chat with designers about their style choices.  If I was in Atlanta I don't think I could resist!

I write about interior design and architecture on various platforms, online and in print.

I am fascinated not just with the visually intoxicating aspects of design, but also the story behind the designs: the designers, their brands, the materials, etc.

Design for me is a full sense experience- it must look stunning, feel luxurious and substantial, it must be acoustically inviting, and it needs to smell clean and healthy.
