10 New Year's Resolutions You Can Actually Keep

Written by Jaymi Naciri Posted On Saturday, 28 December 2013 09:35

1. Save more.

Yeah. That's always easier said than done. But little changes really can make a difference. If you can't give up eating out, check your mail for coupon packs, and plans to eat out at least once a week according to where you have coupons. Think that won't make a dent? If you save 15% of $30 once a week for a year, that's almost $250. Are you a latte-aholic? Hit up McDonalds. The same grande vanilla latte you would pay $4.15 for at Starbucks costs $3.29. And we dare you to tell the difference.

2. Sing Karaoke.

Will people point and laugh? Probably. So what? The memories of a fun night will be well worth it. And you might even get tapped for the next season of American Idol (but probably not, so do it for the laughs). You might be amazed to see how much fun you can have when you stop worrying about how you look while you're doing it.

3. Make Someone's Day.

Not Dirty Harry style. A gun to the face doesn't typically brighten someone's afternoon. Buy coffee for the car behind you in the McDonalds drive-thru. Make a donation to a homeless shelter - even a small donation will make a difference for them, and you. Help someone across the street. Hold the door for everyone walking in to the store for five minutes. When you concentrate on the pure act of being nice, it comes back to you. And who can't use a little more nice?

4. Call Your Mom.

You know you should.

5. Lose Weight.

Ugh. It's the resolution that got away…every year. Do things differently this year and resolve to make small changes that can make a big difference. No one's saying you have to lower your body fat to a level that will compete with the Rock. Research has shown that "losing 10% of your body weight can have big payoffs for your health," said WebMD. Ten percent of 150 pounds is only 15 pounds. You could lose that by switching to non-fat milk in your latte. Or by giving up soda. "Estimates show that two cans or glasses of soda per day adds approximately 24 to 35 pounds of fat per year, depending on body size, age, habits, etc. Some people (weighing in at 140 pounds) have reported that by giving up two cans of soda per day, without exercise, they lost 20 pounds in six months," said FitDay.

6. Ask For A Raise.

You might not get it, but what if you do? Either way, you'll never know until you ask. Plus, even if your boss says no, the argument you make as to why you deserve one will make him or her think. Sitting down to put your thoughts together about why you are deserving will help clarify your goals, your strength areas, and potential areas of improvement, so in a few months you can make an even stronger argument for that pay bump. 7. Just Say No.

Are you the person everyone comes to…for everything? We've been there. Before you know it, you're helping people move or babysitting their kids every weekend, doing the work they can't get to when yours is already stacked up, and becoming overwhelmed with have-tos. It's OK to say no. No, really. Try it once. You'll be surprised how freeing it is to set a boundary and do what you want to do every once in while.

8. Set A Goal…And Stick To It.

You don't have to sign up for an Ironman competition (although how cool would it be if you did!). Successful goal-setting is about managing expectations. If you want to lose weight, try for 10 pounds. Once you have achieved that goal, set another one. If you want to become the CEO of your company and you're currently at the junior account level, setting a goal for total domination within one year is probably setting yourself up for failure. But setting a goal of rising through the ranks for great work and a great attitude is never out of line.

9. Tell Someone They're Great.

It could be your brother, your best friend, your coworker, or the guy bagging your groceries. No matter who is the recipient of your kind words, they're bound to have their spirits lifted. And making someone happy should also make you happy. Unless you're callous and broken, and in that case…

10. Tell Someone They Suck.

Coworker constantly taking advantage of you? Sibling still treating you like you're five years old? The new year is a great time to decide you don't want to be a doormat. There is a fine line between being helpful and being walked on. So setting a goal to figure out where your line is - that's a good place to start.
