Decorating Your Home With Citrus

As soon as the sun starts shining bright, it's inevitable that we start finding ourselves drawn to bright, sunny colors. And then thinking of ways we can incorporate the same sunny look into our homes.

Citrus colors - bright yellows, bold oranges, vibrant greens - are strong. And they can elicit a strong reaction if overdone (we're still not over the orange chair/green couch combo we had in our living room during our toddler years, and it's been four decades).

Heed a few tips for the perfect citrusy appeal.

A little goes a long way

Like any super bright and bold color, it can get overwhelming quickly. Plus, accessories like pillows and xxx are inexpensive and can be changed out easily and often.

Go for the big pop

Why not upholster your dining room chairs in shocking orange? The streamlined shape in combination with the sleek table makes gives the room a dynamic look.

Incorporate a pattern or two.

A great way to bring in some bold color is to layer bold patterns, like in this Ethan Allen room. The rug plus the patterned bedding and chair give the room texture and color that play off the wall and give the entire space depth.

Make it complementary

The trick to doing color right is making sure your color combos work. The rule of thumb is to check out the color wheel and go next door for a complementary color or directly across for a contrasting color.

Or, simply follow this color combo option from Design Seeds.

Keep it chic

Too much citrus and your room can start to look like a bowl full of sherbet. And too much playfulness in shapes can start to look romper room-ish. Classic pieces accented by citurs accents can create a dynamic yet timeless space.
