Tips for Creating a Modern Nursery

Bringing home baby soon? Gone are the days when you have to go blue for a boy and pink for a girl (or baby yellow in a "We're going to be surprised!" room).

Used to be, the nursery wasn't so much an extension of the house but rather a place where you overloaded on bunnies and puppies or fire trucks and baseball bats. The room had a standard crib and a changing table and a giant glider chair and not much else, save for the appropriately painted walls and that explosion of farm animals or transportation/sports paraphernalia.

But not today. The new rule for nurseries is: anything goes. Want some ideas on how to create a modern nursery? Check them out below.

This room from Buy Modern Baby combines typical baby stuff (crib, wall art) with modern furnishings not meant for little people (décor from HomeGoods, rug from IKEA) for a fun, fresh look.

No firetrucks here. This modern boy's room from Apartment Therapy uses texture, color, and pattern to create a unique space any boy would love to grow into. See Apartment Therapy's key below for specific items and prices:

  1. Herringbone Rug from Urban Outfitters $44 - $199
  2. Hanging Cotton Canvas Laundry Hamper Bag from Casa $11.99
  3. BRIMNES 3 Drawer Chest from IKEA $99
  4. Wood Grain Wall Contact Paper from Design Your Walls $65/roll
  5. Hudson 3-in-1 Convertible Crib in Grey from Babyletto $399
  6. Braided Wool Storage Basket from Garnet Hill $48 - $88

Here's proof that your nursery can be pretty and girly but still a modern space any little princess would want. The wall color, while unusual for a "typical" girl's room, gives the space a great foundation on which to layer cherished items.

Now that you've planned out your modern nursery, it's time to furnish it. And lest you think you need to go put a traditional changing table in the room, check out a few unique choices for diapering.

This industrial option may have been appropriated from the garage, but it makes a cool statement in a kid's space.

This rustic chic table would make a great impact in a baby's room. Just make sure to put a cushion on top!
