8 Things You Need If You Live With a Dog

The pet décor and furnishing world is a cash cow. Need proof - just check out this $1200 pet bed. With all the luxury dog products out there, the sky's the limit when it comes to how much you can spend. But whether you're raising your pup on a budget or are looking to break the bank on accommodations that cost more than the average suburban home, the choices are vast. Either way, a few must-haves will make living with your furry friend easier.

1. Doggie Door

As a dog owner, there is no one single thing that will be more important that giving your pooch the ability to go outside and pee on the lawn instead of in your loving room while you're at work. If you have a dog and a handy partner or friend, the cost will be minimal. Expect to pay more if you have to involve masonry. Don't have a seemingly good option for a doggie door? You can add a pet door in a sliding glass door, in a glass door itself, or even into an aluminum sash window.

2. Dog wipes

Just trust us. When your dog comes home from being boarded smelling of 25 other breeds or rolls in something unmentionable, you'll be happy you have these on hand.

3. Dog bed

These are important if you are the type who doesn't want your dog in your bed (although, in our experience, wanting your dog in his own space doesn't necessarily equate to him actually being in his own space).

4. Wire hairbrush

Keeping one in the drawer of your coffee table or end table. It's a magic tool for removing dog hair and spiffing up throw rugs in a pinch.

5. Designate a dog spot

This is the place you keep the leash and any other dog accessories (that goes for you, dog owner who puts booties on your pup when it's drizzling) so that they're easily accessible, unless you're a fan of the inevitable "Where's the leash?!" conversation that always happens before a walk.

6. Plastic waste bags

We all have to do our part. Plus, you don't want to be shamed by the neighbors walking by while you stand there empty- handed.... your dog in the act.

7. Scotchguard.

Every possible surface. Seriously.

8. And by all means, invest a hundred bucks in a SpotBot.

Sure, you could buy a larger, more expensive carpet cleaner (and if you have an extra couple hundred dollars sitting around, help yourself…) but the SpotBot is genius in its ability to allow you to clean your carpet with as little effort expended as humanly possible. And who doesn't love the idea of that?
