A Modern Take On Fall Colors: Decorating With Orange

As soon as the kids go back to school, it's a downhill slide into autumn, which always puts fall décor on our minds. And while we love the idea of thick, ruddy throws and pinecones layered into tall glass hurricanes, we're not so fond of pumpkin.

The pie yes. The spiced latte, definitely. The color, not so much. As far as we're concerned, burnt orange is only OK when you go/went to the University of Texas. And then only in t-shorts and hoodies, not home décor.

Thankfully, there are lots of other ways to pull orange into your space and make it chic.

"Most oranges are warm, meaning they contain red or yellow, which gives them a friendly inner glow," said Real Simple. "A red orange…feels graphic, so it works well with sleek furniture; a yellow orange nicely contrasts with dark, rustic pieces. When painting walls orange, don't use the color elsewhere in the room—stick to neutrals, like white and cream, to temper the shade. And avoid black, so as not to veer into Halloween territory."

Take inspiration from these stylish rooms that offer a hint, or a whole lot, of orange.

Focal wall

Painting one wall orange makes it a focal point. And it also pulls the eye around the room, connecting the details in the artwork and the chairs on the patio.

Pops of color

Pops of orange in the pillows and artwork add interest to this cozy space and pump up the neutrals.

Go bold

Forget subtlety. The orange wall color, window coverings, and chair cushions make a statement and show off the white and wood accents in the room.

Create contrast

"Dark orange pieces feel especially sophisticated against rich neutrals, like gray," said Real Simple. "For a more playful, animated look, pair bright orange furniture with other bold accents, such as a hot pink chair or a turquoise table lamp."

Go traditional

It's not just modern design aesthetics that can pull off orange with panache. Look at this living space from Traditional Home.

Make a strong first impression

Why save such a striking color for the interior of your home? "Orange is a high-energy color that hollers, "Look at me!" — a great choice for an entry to a home," said Houzz.

Frame the view

What better way to show off your ocean view than with a pop of bright orange that makes the blue look even bluer? Don't have an ocean outside your door? A wooded landscape works too.
