Trend Alert: Cement Tile

The geographic print trend is nothing to scoff at, but it is something to shuffle on. The new, hot way to express this trend is underfoot, with colorful, intricately patterned cement tiles that make a statement in any space.

"It seems only yesterday that the design world and blogosphere were prophesying the now ubiquitous reign of white subway tile," said DÉCOR AID. "Over the course of the last several years, those shiny, 3x6 rectangles have popped up everywhere, from the backsplashes of trendy kitchens to the walls of chic hotel bathrooms. These days, however, designers and architects seem to have moved onto an altogether different form of surface covering."

With origins in the Middle East and North African countries like Morocco, cement tiles bring interest to whatever surface they touch. "These tiles… are both contemporary and vintage and when mixed with modern cabinetry and details, can result in a truly showstopping look," said Elements of Style.

Authentic cement tile can be pricey (this pack of 12, 8 x 8 Moroccan tiles is $103 on Overstock), but you can get the look for less at Home Depot with Merola Tile. These 7 3/4 x 7 3/4 ceramic tiles are just $1.97 each.
