How Motivated Are You To Improve Your Business?
by Jim Gillespie Ph.D.

One of the greatest factors that will determine your level of success in your real estate business is your level of motivation to make it all happen.

Do you have a hunger to constantly learn more? Are you constantly reading newspapers, magazines, Internet news sources, and listening to audio interviews with experts who can teach you to produce even better results?

Recently I was listening to an audio tape interview featuring a man who makes over $2,000,000.00 a year as an owner of a pest control business. While listening to the interview I thought this would be great information to pass along to the man who owns the pest control company that services my home every month. But when I offered to give the man the audiotape absolutely free he responded with, "No, that's OK. I probably wouldn't listen to it anyway."

This was so intriguing to me. I was absolutely stunned that this man had no interest in hearing what one of the most successful men in his industry had to say about becoming highly-successful at owning exactly the same kind of business. Heck, I'm in the real estate coaching and training business, and even I learned some good things about improving my business from listening to this interview!

But there are great parallels with my experience with this man and many, many real estate agents out there. How much are you, for example, constantly looking for new information to help you to be even more successful in your real estate business?

There is always more real estate business out there for you in any type of economy. The fact that other agents in your territory or farm area are closing transactions that you are not involved in proves this. With anywhere from tens to hundreds of agents besides you working and making a living in your territory, that's a lot of business that could be going to you instead of to them.

Take a step back from your business and let this sink in for a moment. The additional business that you want is there right now for you, but it's being successfully closed by other agents instead of you. You just need to commit to discovering and doing what will direct more of this business your way instead of to your competition in the future. Now how interested are you in making this happen?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. How motivated am I to improve my business and do whatever is necessary to take both my income and success in my real estate career to the next level?
  2. What do I need to change about my strategy and my day-to-day activities in my business to make this happen?
  3. When am I going to begin making these changes?

If you feel it's appropriate, write down the names of one or more people you can go to who have the expertise to help you recognize what it is you need to begin doing to achieve the level of success that you want to achieve in your real estate business.

And finally, there is an ongoing feeling that often runs through us in our real estate business that we as agents should do it all alone. If you are already producing results in your business that you are absolutely thrilled with then what I am about to say may definitely not apply to you. But if you've been trying for sometime now to take your business up to a new level of success and you haven't yet done it you need to try something different.

You need to consult with one or more people who have the expertise to show you exactly what you need to do to achieve the success that you desire. There's an old expression that says that, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Don't let yourself be the poster child for this in your real estate business.

Recognize when it's time to seek out the expertise of people who already know how to get you to exactly where you want to be in your real estate business in the shortest possible time.
