You Better Pay the Gatekeeper
Posted By: Newberry - 05/01/2001 03:52 PM

Inevitably all roads seem to lead to HomeStore and their Partner relationship with NAR. No matter how innovative the product, such as Visual Tours, you don?t get past the door unless you pay the gatekeeper.

For years the gatekeeper has been the NAR charging admission to the real estate party in the name of their members. When they passed the baton to Homestore the party became much more expensive. HomeStore, after all, is a very savvy company that knows how to make a buck. Thus it should surprise no one that they are much more adept at the gatekeeper role.

You want Visual Tours on Realtor.com, no problem, you have to pay to play. Obviously the loser is the agent who pays monopolistic prices for sub-standard products and service.

I believe that one reason for this sad state of affairs is the woeful lack of journalistic integrity in our profession. Take a look at the journalist and their publications that are supposed to be in the business of writing objective news stories.

Realtor Magazine. A mouth piece for the NAR

Inman News. In the business of promoting Inman Connect.

Rismedia. They seem to only reprint press releases.

The local association newspapers/newsletter. In the business of selling add space with fluffy, ?how to? stories.

Realtytimes. This sandwich is definitely buttered on the advertising side thus the reporting is biased toward the advertisers. Take a look at the ?site of the day? or as it should be called, ?the paid site for the month ad.?

It seems that in our industry everything comes with a price. And when you put a price on something, be it access or reporting, it will eventual be bought. When Homestore bought the NAR there were no journalist to report the truth. They were all too busy writing stories about the newest product or service that we have to buy to get rich quick.
