From many, many years of experience with all types of agents, I have learned that it is best to pass info along to your client in different terms than agent to agent lingo. For instance, in this case, the buyer should have been told, "Looks like we might have a deal, Seller has agreed verbally, but no signature so we can't take it to escrow just yet. If a better offer comes in before Seller signs, would you like an opportunity to meet it?" Something like this prepares the buyer that there is a possibility the deal will fall through.
