Response To: Are Leads the New Battleground of the Listings Wars? (Blanche Evans - 11/17/1999)

Doesn't fit my definition of a lead.

"What is an Internet lead?
Ian Morris, product manager for HomeAdvisor defines a lead this way:
Someone who clicked from our site to their site."

If Mr. Morris' method of counting real leads is correct then everyone who drives by a listing and reads the yard sign should be counted as a lead.

I've personally been on the Internet with a real estate oriented web sites for about 5 years now and the overwhelming majority of my leads (and closed sales) come from my personal web sites.

I have received a handful of leads from Realtor.com and ZERO so far from HomeAdvisor.

My definition of a qualilty lead is a real live prospect that I think has a reasonable expectation of leading to a sale that produces a commission check I can take to the bank not someone in cyberspace looking at the pretty houses for amusement.

Not related to this story but very connected to leads, has anyone noticed the new stuff on YOUR listings on REALTOR.com. At the bottom of each of YOUR listings are two new links; "Free City Report" and "Free School Report".

Both of these links take you to the HomeFair, a site recently acquired by HomeStore.com, Realtor.com new parent company.

Once there if you fill out the information in the dark blue titled "City Reports" which asks for your origin city and destination city if you're moving, you are then taken to a site which offer to refer you to a "qualilfied real estate professional" to help you sell your current home and also refer you to a "qualified real estate professional" where you're moving to help you buy a new home. Just think, all this is just two mouse clicks from YOUR listing which brought the customer there in the first place.

My definition of this is OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!

Realtor.com will be hearing from me today on this issue. I urge all my fellow Realtors to make your voice heard too!!
