Response To: How To Buy A Great Web Site (Blanche Evans - 03/30/2001)

Building a Great Internet Business

First of all, all the the articles are right on the money, and I fully agree that it has to be more than a website. With most of our business coming from the the Internet, the mainstay of our success over the years has always been our COMSTOCK site. It provides our virtual tours, grand tours, and allows us to capture our web leaads through a registration process.

I also agree with your assertion is correct that to be successful, you have to have an overall web strategy. I feel the agents can only do this if they have a basic understanding on how the entire process works. This holds true whether you are buying a site, or creating one. The only way they can do this is self education and research.

Here are some observations that I would like to share with you regarding "Success on the Internet!" I gained these insights from speaking to agent groups across the country, on line, and in mastermind groups. One major common element that I've found... is that most agents do not have a clue as to what to expect from thier website. They do not know the difference of an email address or url, yet expect they should be making mega bucks from thier website. That is hard to swallow, especially since they tell me on the side they only read their email once a week. They will share with me personally after a pesentation, is that they do not understand anything about the Internet, but know that they have to have a website. I would ask why? Yet most are willing to pay dearly for a site, throw money at a webmaster, buy a dozen domain names, and then say "It doesn't work, but I use it as a listing tool!" I think that is the wrong answer. I mean wouldn't it be better if your site was actually making real money? A second point, that if you are delegating your web work to a webmaster, or hosting company, wouldn't it be better if you understood the task at hand?

I also get many inquiries each week from agents that I've met, that ask me how to do things, how to get more business from the Internet, how to get better web position...etc... but they don't realize, I work full time at real estate. Our web business is very successful, but it takes a lot of research time, and web developement. That is the main reason that we do well with it. However there is a payoff if you understand the process. Its all about self-education.

A major part of success on the net begins with a basic understanding of how and why it works, and how does the Internet user find you? The only way you can get the answer to this is by doing some research.

At this point, most agents will tell me that they do not have time to research on the Internet, because it will take away from thier productivity. What an agent should realize, this is a productive activity that will produce real money, and lots of it if approached correctly. It is one of those things, you just can't throw a lot of money at, you have to roll up your sleeves, and get down to some nitty gritty web marketing research.

On the brightside, this research will actually make you a lot of money in closed sales and referrals, and save you a lot of money in traditional marketing dollars.

So here are some sugestions:

Learn some basic HTML

Have a basic knowledge of java scripts

Learn about the major search engines

What are they and why?

Understand how the major search engines work

Search for some basic search engine facts

When viewing webs, right click on a mouse, and start viewing page sources

Start learning about web construction

Research meta tags

Learn about web placement and position

Ask Internet clients what they look for on website

Ask web clients their likes and dislikes

Do this without spending money or buying anything

Rememeber Internet information is FREE!

Remember knowldge is power
