Journalism Vs. Advertorials
Posted By: insider_truth - 05/03/2001 08:01 AM
Before I get started, I could be way off base here. Maybe this site is not really meant to be journalistic. I don't own it and don't pretend to know how it is operated. I only know how it appears to be structured. If it really isn't intended to be a News gathering and reporting organization, just say so and I will try to find other sources of information and places to post commentary, if it is a News organization please continue reading with an open mind.
Blanche I have to hand it to you. You are the ultimate Spin Doctor. It would appear that you can take a press release from only the big players (you've never printed anything from a release sent by smaller tech companies that I have represented or others I have worked for) and then ask them, "How much better do you want the article to sound"?
Let's see some opposing viewpoints. Ask some Coldwell Banker agents that are absolutely incensed about this move by Cendant why they feel they are being duped and let them explain why. And don't just do it with one. Get a focus group together of folks that are in the know. Do some balanced reporting for a change. I am starting to agree with what some other folks are saying about this site, it's a little more "advertorial" than it is journalism.
Whether you personally view this as a good thing or not is not relevant to the story, your job as journalist is to dig to expose how it effects everyone and show any downside that might be a part of the story. You rarely do that. I was glad to see the homeseekers article, but it was pointed out to me by another poster that some details were left out, How much does Realty Alliance get out of the deal, can Homeseekers really make money with the deal? Is it good for the agents?
You're a great writer, now let's see if you have it in you to be a great journalist. Take some risks, you'll like the rewards. Please reply to this without taking it personally, it's not intended to be anything that would impune your character or position. I am sure if I knew you personally I would enjoy your company and your professional ability.
