Response To: Is A Commission Worth Losing a Friend? (Blanche Evans - 04/26/2000)

Good Business Demands Flexibility
Posted By: Ken Deshaies - 04/26/2000 01:00 PM

I learned long ago that inflexibility can not only hurt friendships, but block your business growth as well. It's important to see the situation, not only from your eyes, but from the seller's as well. This situation provides a choice for the licensee. Either Mary explains to her friend that she is bound by her company policy on commissions, and refers Mary to another Realtor (she could get a referral fee), or she works out a compromise with her friend. She might realize that a quick sale is good for her, as well, especially being new in the business. Why not an arrangement where the commission is reduced if the property sells as quickly as the seller anticipates, but increases to "full" if it doesn't and a full scale marketing campaign becomes called for. Then everybody wins.
