Response To: Should Trademarked Names Deliver Leads To Competitors? (Blanche Evans - 08/07/2001)

Help Me Understand This Please

Am I to understand that if a REALTORŪ uses the word REALTORŪ in their meta content, they are doing something NAR frowns on? Don't I get to use the designation by virtue of the fact that I am a licensed sales professional that pays my "trade association" to do so?

Interesting, there's a completely new way to ensure that homestore gets more of their precious pages views and the aggregate membership gets less, thus creating a new tactic for NAR and Homestore to increase "subscription" revenue.

It works a little like the virtual tour scenario. You can have a link to your tour on our site, as long as you pay us for the privelege. Now it will be, You can use the designation that you pay NAR for every year, as long as you pay Homestore for the privelege using the designation to draw traffic to your website. Of course it needs to be a supersized, biggie, technolgocially advanced iLEAD XL 2001 supersite!

Maybe NAR and Homestore are paying some geek $200 bucks an hour to write a web crawler that grabs every site using REALTORŪ in the meta content, does a reverse look up on the domain, creates an automatic cease and desist letter and forwards the info to the sales department so they can telemarket the offending prospect by telling them, Hey you already paid for the site you have, but because you are breaking the rules you'll need to buy ours.

This could open up whole new revenue streams for other markets. GM could nail all of the car dealers that use the word Chevrolet in their meta content. That is assuming they are stupid enough to steal from the hand that feeds them.
