Thanks for your note.
I don't think there is any can to open -- every broker should be free to practice as they elect and the marketplace will reflect what the public wants.
There are and have been flat fee and discount services for a very long time. I remember such firms in the 1970s and no doubt earlier ones were around.
This leads to several central points:
1. Brokers should practice as they elect.
2. The public will pick and choose among broker offerings and opt for those which best meet their needs.
3. MLS systems should be equally open to all brokers
4. Everyone benefits when a range of services is available to the public.
5. It is a marketplace reality that discount and flat fee brokers have not dominated the industry.
The last item is a factual observation, not the expression of a preference.
