Response To: Were Homes.com Salespeople Left Holding The Check? (Blanche Evans - 03/22/2001)

Homes.com

As a former EMC with Homes.com I have been following the stories with interest. Fortunately for me I resigned my position in early January and am happily employed. It was time to move on for many reasons.

In defense of Homes.com and some of the comments I have read, I can validate, Homes.com was a wonderful, fun place to work. Looking back I think the top of the company set unrealistic expectations regarding the sales cycle in general. To expect the volume of sales they anticipated right out the box may have been far too aggressive given what they knew or did not know about each market place.

The problem I have with this article is with Prep. Pat Zaby is a wonderful man who has made great contributions to the real estate industry. Homes.com bought his company with every good intention. When the EMC's became aware of the bugs in Prep release 4.0 I would have to say the majority of us were very straight forward with prospects and clients. Bugs in newly released software are not uncommon, just ask Microsoft. In this case the rush to please created problems. If any EMC was foolish enough to compromise their prinicipals, all for the sake of a sale, that is truly unfortunate and not anything to blame the company for. Had I been told to do so I would have told the messenger to take a hike. I have a favorite saying "People can handle what they know, they cannot handle what they do not know." Did I get antsy wondering when the new release would come? Absolutley, and it was frustrating to explain the delay. Again, unfortunate but certainly not a deliberate event to ship a poor quality product out. The old saying s--- happens applies.

I highly doubt most EMC's thought Homes.com was in so much financial trouble. I resigned due to the manner in which the company handled reimbusement of expenses and because I did not agree with the management style in place.

The tech team and the emc's were and are all good people who loved the company and the jobs they did and many still do because they believe in this company and the product. I find this entire situation sad. Who is to blame? Is it ego's at work? I doubt we will never know all the truth behind the events, but personally, I hope brokers and agents hang in there with Homes.com and give the tech team a chance, what do you have to loose?

This lastest turn of events removed the choice for 150 employees. They were there because they belived in what they were doing. Maybe the latest turn of events will bring about corrections so everyone wins. I hope so for every broker who belived in the choice they made when they stepped on board. For me, it was a privledge and an honor to work with so many wonderful people in the real estate industry. Many of my former colleauges felt and feel the same way. We were all there because we loved what we did and we had a healthy respect for the industry we served.

Regards,
Peg Woelky
Former EMC
