Response To: Is A Commission Worth Losing a Friend? (Blanche Evans - 04/26/2000)

Selling v. Servicing
Posted By: annbutler - 04/27/2000 06:18 AM

Yes, we sell homes to earn our living. However, I think the true agenda here is that we are a service business. Helping the client make the right decision is the key to success. In this ever-changing industry, flexibility, client education, and excellent problem-solving skills are all important. Finding a solution to the client's dilemma is not possible without seeing it from their perspective. (Mary feels she can net more by not paying a full commission.)

I personally think fee-for-service or contingency agreements(as other professionals: legal, accounting, consulting)will be the preferred method of the Realtor in the future.

The problem in this scenario is Ann's company is not thinking outside the box by insisting on full-service commission-oriented listings. They may just be left behind in the future changes of this industry.

Having that flexibility means keeping the friendship and the business. Mary should possibly rethink her affiliation with her company.
