In 1891, Dr. Alexander John Chandler built a ranch on 80 acres of land, building canal systems that enabled the development of agriculture and the establishment the town of Chandler. Cotton was the region's biggest crop, but farmers also raised cattle, sheep and ostriches, which are celebrated every March at the Chandler Ostrich Festival. Chandler's grown from 30,000 residents in 1980 to more than 176,581 in 2000, and with that, it developed eight golf courses and traded an agricultural past for a technological and service-based future.
