Location Characteristics: A small farming community until the '80s, when Gilbert experienced a 410-percent population jump, today Gilbert is known for it's quiet quality of life and strong schools.
Companies are increasingly locating to this bedroom community, along with housing, luxury retail and big-box retail developments, but Gilbert proudly clings to its rural roots, boasting the Gilbert Days' Rodeo and the Gilbert Historical Society Museum.
With a population of more than 109,697 in 2000, Gilbert now has five golf courses, a dog park, a skate park, two garden parks and four recreation centers.
This city with a small-town feel is about 22 miles southeast of downtown Phoenix, bordered by Chandler to the west and Mesa to the north.
Gilbert is part of the Gilbert Unified School District.
