The school district welcomes families from all over the Valley to its 24 centers of excellence. Kyrene is one of the fastest growing school districts of its size in Arizona. Kyrene now has 19 elementary schools and six middle schools. Students achieve above-average ranking in national standardized tests. Tempe Union High School District's mission is Excellence in Teaching and Learning. That mission is put into action every day as Tempe Union delivers a high quality education marked by a commitment to serving the needs of students and their families. Arizona State University's (ASU) main campus occupies 700 acres in the heart of Tempe. It has been designated an arboretum and features a variety of documented and labeled plants and trees that provide a welcoming, park like setting for the university buildings, many of which have earned architectural honors. An architectural hallmark is ASU's Gammage Auditorium, a great hall designed by the 20th century's major architectural talent, Frank Lloyd Wright. The auditorium seats 3,000 and hosts numerous first-class productions. The 324-acre ASU Research Park is also located in Tempe. It brings together researchers and corporate leaders from private industry, governmental agencies and the university to provide a mechanism to integrate technological results from university research into private corporate programs.
Tempe is defined by its youthful vitality, present at Arizona State University (ASU) and downtown Tempe's Mill Avenue. On any given day, visitors can find a live music, theater, comedy, or dance performance including funky local bands, award-winning local theater, blockbuster Broadway productions, and contemporary dance companies. More than 20 free museums and galleries are located at ASU, including the ASU Art Museum, which houses a permanent collection of 19th- and 20th-century American art, and revolving contemporary art exhibits. Tempe is home to exciting professional sports, like the Arizona Cardinals and pro beach volleyball competitions, and energetic college sports, such as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Football classic, and Arizona State University events. Visitors and residents alike enjoy hiking in Papago Park and enjoying the endless bike paths scattered throughout the city.
Tempe has the highest concentration of high technology firms in Arizona. In addition, Tempe has the densest industrial area in Arizona, and two zip codes (85282 and 85281) represent the highest concentration of businesses in Arizona. While Tempe represents less than four percent of the state's population, more than 15 percent of Arizona's high-tech companies are located in Tempe.
The Research Park boasts more than 18 acres of an unsurpassed environment of mature landscaping, three lakes, six miles of jogging paths, picnic ramadas and tennis courts. The park is located adjacent to the 101 Freeway and only 15 minutes from the airport. Some of Tempe's largest employers include Arizona State University, 14,000 employees; Salt River Project, 2,175; Honeywell, 1,800; America West Airlines, 4,000; Motorola, 3,775; Tempe Elementary School District, 1,700; Chase Manhattan, 1,700; and City of Tempe, 2,000.
