Location Characteristics: Located in the heart of the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. corridor, Upper Marlboro provides a perfect balance of urban living and country charm. It is one of the oldest of the surviving southern Maryland towns with histories dating back to colonial times. The area was settled around 1695 and named after the first Duke of Marlborough (an ancestor of Winston Churchill). Upper Marlboro has been the seat of Prince George's County government since 1721, and today is the county's largest city with more than 71,000 residents. The fields of tobacco that once dominated the countryside have given way to numerous residential and commercial developments. The Show Place Arena and Equestrian Center is one of the community's major landmarks and more than 23,000 acres of parkland throughout the county provide diverse recreational activities. Open undeveloped land and an extensive array of recreational facilities are available. In addition, the Upper Marlboro area has some of the most valuable real estate in the region. Beautiful homes in a wide variety of architectural styles can be found along the town's many quiet, tree-lined streets.
