Location Characteristics: The City of St. Cloud, incorporated in 1856, is located just south of the geographic center of Minnesota and is situated along the wooded banks of the Mississippi and Sauk Rivers, 65 miles northwest of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. St. Cloud serves as the commercial and business hub for over 160,000 people and three counties.

St. Cloud is the political, cultural, commercial, and manufacturing center for all of central Minnesota. A sophisticated transportation network makes St. Cloud readily available to all parts of the region.

St. Cloud boasts of many things to do, comprising of 21 movie theaters, 5 live theatres, 28 city and county parks and world-renowned gardens. It also offers 14 public schools, 6 private schools and 5 colleges and universities. There are also many industries that call St. Cloud their homes, including granite, metal working, hospitality, printing and health care.

Residents of St. Cloud can also enjoy that season changes of the midwest. There is plenty of snowfall for skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding. Spring, summer and fall are very pleasant. Extremely hot days with temperatures of 100 degrees (F) or higher occur only once in every 5 to 10 years and are rarely recorded on successive days.

St. Cloud was founded as three separate settlements founded by three distinctly different gentlemen. The three settlements, founded between 1853-1855, were located on the west bank of the Mississippi River near the Sauk River. The demand for protection from the varied hardships of pioneer life forced the three settlements to merge into one city.

Quality of life in the area is high, with St. Cloud's cost of living index consistently lower than other cities of comparable size in the upper midwest. The varied range of cultural, social and recreational events available provide residents with entertainment and fun year-round.

Education is a priority in St. Cloud with area high schools ranking among the best in the nation. Area high school graduation rates are five percent above the state average, with SAT scores in the top 20 percent.

A thriving arts community and an array of local festivals and cultural events abound in the area. Theater groups provide a changing schedule of entertainment, art galleries showcase local artists, and area schools welcome visiting artists-in-residence.
