Location Characteristics: The city of Forest Acres is an older community close to shopping, fine restaurants, cultural events downtown, good schools and more. It was incorporated in 1935. You will find established neighborhoods mixed with some mature pines, hardwoods, dogwoods and azaleas which make spring spectacular here. Quality built older homes on tree lined streets, many with sidewalks. New homes mixed in. Communities offer quality built homes at a high per SF price. Older resales offer established neighborhoods and yards, charm. Hardwood floors are popular in SC, some homes have Carriage drop offs (Car Ports). Quality built older homes for the most part, some with larger wooded lots. There are also some new homes here and you can imagine those prices are fairly high. Very nice area and convenient to work, Richland Mall, hospitals. Fort Jackson and entertainement. Convenient to downtown restaurants and work, USC, Stadium and more.
Arcadia Lakes is a town of it's own located off Trendholm Road and Decker Blvd named after it's 7 lakes. Popular because of the convenient location to downtown.
There is also Lake Katherine that has a large larke off Trendhold Rd. You will find magnificent older homes around here as well and a beautiful bloom in spring. Trendholm Plazaand Woodhill Mall on Garners Ferry Rd is very conveniently located for all your shoping needs.
US News reported recently (per The State Paper 9/30/09) that Columbia is in the 10 best affordable places to retire to. They said that "Retirees want a more diverse set of opportunities and they can find that in a university town".
US News said it "thought out places with low cost of living and reasonable housing prices that still offered access to the services and amenities that people should look for in an ideal retirement spot"
