Location Characteristics: Occasionally omitted from Virginia maps, the Eastern Shore is a small peninsula 17 miles wide (at the widest point) and 70 miles long. It stretches south from the Maryland state line to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which connects it to Virginia Beach. The peninsula is bounded by the Chesapeake Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
By most standards, it is very rural and not densely populated. Recent estimates puts the population at just over 52,600 people. No big shopping malls here, but a great place to live and enjoy a sweeter, quieter pace of life.
