There are a lot of recreational and outdoor activities in Birmingham. Lakes and parks are abundant in Birmingham as well as some excellent golf courses. Plenty of bike paths can be found throughout the city limits as well as picturesque areas for a leisure family picnic. Shopping is also a major draw to Birmingham. Location Characteristics: Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama and is the county seat of Jefferson County. It also includes part of Shelby County. Birmingham's population was 229,800 according to the 2007 estimate. The city was founded in 1871, just after the U.S. Civil War, as an industrial enterprise and named Birmingham after the major industrial city in the United Kingdom.

The city of Birmingham is served by the Birmingham City Schools system. It is run by the Birmingham Board of Education with a current active enrollment of 30,500 in 67 schools: 11 high schools, 13 middle schools, 34 elementary schools, and 9 K-8 secondary schools. The University of Alabama at Birmingham is one of the best medical schools in the country along with having one of the best liberal arts schools at Birmingham-Southern College.
Birmingham has many cultural events, and recreation activities. The Alabama Theater, Carver Theater, Fair Park Arena, Boutwell Auditorium, Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) all hosts film screenings, concerts and performances. Located on UAB campus The Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts is home to Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Opera Birmingham as well as several series of concerts and lectures.
