If you are interested in a place that has it all--beautiful ocean views, equestrian center, community orchards, and hiking trails in a gated community close to amenities, the area on the northern Pacific coast may be your answer. The white sandy beaches and dryer climate of this area was one of the first attractions of this area years ago when Costa Rica first started attracting serious developers. A one to seven acre lot in this sort of development can be had for $70,000 to $200,000, lower than it has been in the past

While development has slowed down in the northern Pacific region of Costa Rica, well-financed developers continue to work on their projects to the north and south of Tamarindo. Prices continue to drop due to the US recession, but many believe this period of fire-sale properties may have a limited window as confidence in the US economy increases. Many people are drawn to this area because of low housing costs, good health care, and the Costa Rican culture where natives have been recently cited as "the happiest people on the planet".

Because this area is within an hour's drive of the Liberia international airport, has beautiful sandy beaches and coves and lots of sunshine, the area is still considered a great investment for the long-term. .

There are bargains to be found a little outside of the high-tourist areas. Nice condos and beach-view homes can be found for $150,000-200,000.

Approximate Location Boundaries: Nicoya Peninsula up to the Nicaraguan boarder, and inland to Liberia International Airport

Location Characteristics: The western coastal regions are known for the beautiful sandy beaches of Tamarindo and other coastal towns, and the greater quantity of sunshine compared to the southern zone. It is also a bit windier and dryer than other part of Costa Rica. This is part of the area called "Guanacaste" where the dry tropical forests are in abundance and the Guanacaste tree thrives.

This was the first area in Costa Rica to become very popular a few years ago due to the opening of the new international airport in Liberia. One can fly right in to Liberia and be at the coast in less than 90 minutes.

In summary, the west has the beautiful Pacific beaches and coastline, the east is rain forest and volcanoes, and the north is cattle country. The central and and southern areas have flat land, mountain valleys, tropical vegetation and remote hill country.

The province of Guanacaste was once part of Nicaragua, so the language and culture of this region refect that.
