Location Characteristics: The picturesque town of Punta Gorda is located on the banks of the Peace River and the Gulf of Mexico in Southwest Florida. It traces its heritage to a landing at Live Oak Point on the Peace River by Hernando DeSoto in 1539. The name itself means "Broad Point" in the language of the Conquistadors. Geographically sited between the larger areas of Sarasota to the north and Fort Myers to the south, it is easily accessed from I75 and is intersected by US Highway 41. It is the county seat and is the only incorporated area in Charlotte County, Florida. Small-town friendly, Punta Gorda is populated with citizens who have a passion for the relaxed coastal lifestyle and all that implies. With its easy access to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico, fishing, boating and sailing opportunities abound.
